FORMER TEACHER - How Can I Help You?

Hello, My name is Jim. I was a teacher at the Kramar school from February - May 2019. During my time in Zlate Moravce I documented many things that I believe will help future teachers. I started this blog so that I can share this information. This blog is completely independent of the Kramar school. The information here was accurate when I was in Zlate Moravce. Some of the details may have changed but this information should still help you ask the right questions. If you are heading to  Jazykova Skola Kramar or another school in  Zlate Moravce, please feel free to contact me - especially if the school has told you not to contact me. My direct email is jleonard518@gmail.com. We can also arrange a WhatsApp call. Good Luck, Jim https://www.facebook.com/jskramar/

FORMER TEACHER - Leaving Early in June

For the past two years Peter has offered to have the native speakers leave before the end of June. The school is open until the last Thursday in June. This year the last day of school is Thursday, June 27th. Peter may want you to stay through the end of June next year. In 2019 he asked all three native speakers if they would like to skip the last two weeks. There's nothing wrong with departing early but you need to be aware of the possibility so that you can plan. Consider this when making your flight arrangements for the end of June.  Remember than if you leave early and opt to travel you will only be paid a half month's salary for June.  https://www.facebook.com/jskramar/

FORMER TEACHER - Trade Visa, Residency, and Health Insurance

I wish I could give you more specific details about this process but I don't have them. I was exempt from this process. I'm just going to give you an overview of the process so that you can ask more specific questions. To work in Slovakia you must have: A trade visa Slovakian national health insurance Two bank accounts - one personal, one business A residency card The trade council office in Nitra has recently experienced incredible backlogs due to mass hiring at the Jaguar factory. Hopefully that is no longer a problem when you arrive. Regardless, the various government offices that handle these documents are not very efficient so you'll likely spend more than one morning waiting for one or the other.  Other notes: Your contract will state that the fees for this whole process range from 100 - 500 euros. If you are not an EU citizen, this will go to 500 euros. Plan for that as you budget.  When you fly into the EU Schengen Area you will have 90-days to g...

FORMER TEACHER - Zlate Moravce English Club

Zlate Moravce English Club - Facebook Group https://www.facebook.com/groups/2088114458154562/ This group is not officially connected with  Jazyková Škola Kramár.  This group was created to give native speakers a chance to help English learners and hopefully develop a social network in Zlate Moravce.  For my first few months here I felt like no one in Zlate Moravce spoke English. Over time, I had a few random encounters with English speakers and I have been thrilled to find that there is a small English-speaking community. A handful of people in Zlate Moravce have lived in the UK for a while and then returned. We have created a Facebook group (Zlate Moravce English Club) to coordinate this event. For the rest of the 2018-2019 school year we are going to have English Night in Zlate Moravce. The plan is to meet at the music bar on Sundays at 5 PM. Anyone who wants to practice English is welcome to stop by. Our adult students are invited. We hope that this wi...

FORMER TEACHER - Slovakian Banks

I cannot speak from direct experience but I do want to give you a 'heads up' about banking in Slovakia. By western standards the banking system is painfully inefficient. Native speakers are required to have two bank accounts. Previously the school had used Tatra Bank but that branch recently closed. Depending on the current promotion when you sign up, you will pay 7-10 euros per month to have the two bank accounts. It doesn't matter how much money you have in the bank.  You can use the bank's phone app to pay your national health insurance. One British teacher was about to use an IBAN to send money to her UK bank rather easily. I think IBAN stands for International Bank Account Number. One Australian teacher was told there would be a 40-euro fee to wire money back to Australia. She found a different option through an online platform.  Opening an account can take hours. I have no idea why it is so inefficient.  When you close the accounts you will pay a ridicul...

FORMER TEACHER - Monthly Expenses & Budgeting

Monthly Expenses: ·        Pay Jarmila (Peter’s grandmother) for your room rent – to be determined (estimate € 150) ·        Pay € 63 to the national health insurance program using the Tatra Bank phone app. ·        Tatra Bank charges € 7-10 per month for your accounts. You are required to have two bank accounts. One for business and one for personal use. The rest of your money can be split between travel & entertainment or food, toiletries, & cleaning supplies. Budgeting: How much you save really depends on how much you spend on food, both cooked at the guest house and eating out. When you arrive you should plan for some start-up costs. For example, you will buy your first box of laundry detergent, some cleaning supplies, a large bottle of shampoo, etc. You should plan on arriving with at least 500 euros to get you through your first month before your first pay day. ...

FORMER TEACHER - Other Helpful Tips

·        The ATMs in town have an option for English. ·        You should carry your passport with you everywhere - at least when you leave Zlate Moravce. In Slovakia a police officer can stop you and ask to see your identification. This has not happened to me. ·        You will need an international driving permit and your driver’s license from your home country in order to drive the school’s teacher car. If you are coming from America you can get your international driving permit at a AAA office. ·        You might want to bring a cheap pair of flip-flops to wear when you stay in hostels. ·        The teacher house does not have a drip coffee maker.   If you drink coffee I recommend spending the extra money for Davidoff Espresso 57. It’s €7.99 at Tesco. It is much more expensive than the other options but it really does...
