Monthly
Expenses:
· Pay Jarmila (Peter’s grandmother) for your room rent –
to be determined (estimate €150)
· Pay €63
to the national health insurance program using the Tatra Bank phone app.
· Tatra Bank charges €7-10 per month for your accounts. You are required to
have two bank accounts. One for business and one for personal use.
The rest of your money can be split
between travel & entertainment or food, toiletries, & cleaning supplies.
Budgeting:
How much you save really depends on how
much you spend on food, both cooked at the guest house and eating out. When you
arrive you should plan for some start-up costs. For example, you will buy your
first box of laundry detergent, some cleaning supplies, a large bottle of
shampoo, etc.
You should plan on arriving with at
least 500 euros to get you through your first month before your first pay day.
This won’t be enough to cover a weekend trip out of Slovakia but it will be
enough for initial expenses, food, and a few day trips by bus. If you are a
non-EU citizen you need to have another 500 euros to cover your work visa fees.
Below are my actual expenses on food and
toiletries for a 15-day period. This includes two Friday/Saturday trips to
Bratislava where restaurant prices are a bit higher. This list does not include
coffees or beers that were consumed without food. It also does not include any
tips I left at a restaurant.

I think it’s fair to estimate that you
will spend 350€ -
400€ per month in this category. You can
clearly save more by cooking every single meal at the teacher house but you
will probably appreciate going out a few times a week.
NOTE: The estimated monthly budget below
excludes the work visa and related documentation fees. If you end up paying the
full 500 euros (Australians, Canadians, and Americans) then you need to deduct
another 50 euro each month over the 10-month contract.

This is a fair estimate of how your
monthly budget will look.
I see that the jobs for the coming school year are being advertised with a salary range of 800€ - 1200€ per month. When I was there the three teachers were earning 952€ (28 classes), 1020€ (30 classes) and about 1100€ (this included some morning pre-K classes).
ReplyDeleteI highly recommend you get your salary expectation in writing before you go. If you actually end up only making 800€ per month you will struggle for money. Also, there are not enough available teaching hours for anyone to actually earn 1200€. I think this is very misleading.
