I cannot speak from direct experience but I do want to give you a 'heads up' about banking in Slovakia. By western standards the banking system is painfully inefficient. Native speakers are required to have two bank accounts. Previously the school had used Tatra Bank but that branch recently closed.
- Depending on the current promotion when you sign up, you will pay 7-10 euros per month to have the two bank accounts. It doesn't matter how much money you have in the bank.
- You can use the bank's phone app to pay your national health insurance.
- One British teacher was about to use an IBAN to send money to her UK bank rather easily. I think IBAN stands for International Bank Account Number.
- One Australian teacher was told there would be a 40-euro fee to wire money back to Australia. She found a different option through an online platform.
- Opening an account can take hours. I have no idea why it is so inefficient.
- When you close the accounts you will pay a ridiculous fee of 25-40 euros. This will apply even if the account balance is zero.
I enjoyed many things about Slovakia but unfortunately, I can't say anything positive about the banks. I was lucky because I was exempt from having a bank account so none of this affected me.
