There
are many hikes near Zlate Moravce. You can find trail heads on Google by
searching on ‘hiking near zlate moravce’. The two red icons on the right side
of this screen shot show trail heads.
On your phone you can save the trail
head locations as favorites so they will show up even when you don’t have a
WiFi signal. Below are some hikes that I did in 2019. The distance from the
school is noted so that you can plan for the cost of refueling the teacher car.
This map might be helpful when planning
a hike:
The DM drug store near Lidl sells
mosquito and tick repellent. Most of the options are the Off brand by Johnson
& Johnson from America. The ‘tropical’ option is the most expensive (€6 for 100ml) but it appears to be 25% DEET if I’m reading the label
correctly.
Trail Heads – This is a list of trail heads that I visited.
Hopefully future teachers will add to it.

When you turn
off of the paved road you will drive two kilometers on a rather rough road.
About 200 meters past the GPS location is a clearing where you can turn the
car around and park. The yellow and white blazes follow the old road which
was once paved with asphalt. About 5-6km in, when you are near the peak you
will see blazes for a red trail and a blue trail.

There is a
small car park at the bottom of the hill. It’s about a 15-minute walk up to
the castle. From the castle area you can follow the red or green blazes for
miles. The trails are largely dirt roads and in one direction a good bit of
it is in an open field rather than in the forest. It’s better suited for mountain
biking than hiking.

You can park
here on the side of the road. It’s about two hours to the Nitra TV tower.
Follow the red trail blazes towards Nitra. About a kilometer in you turn left
and climb a rather steep hill. At the top of this hill is ‘Žibrica 617 m
n.m.’ which is the highest point and can be found on Google Maps. Next you
descend the other side of the hill. It’s another hour to get to the tower. At
the end you have a wonderful view of Nitra and a great place for a picnic
lunch.

This is a great
location for both hiking and mountain biking. There are multiple trails that
cross through this parking area. On my first hike here I mostly followed the
red trail (and a bit of the green and white). There are fantastic views and
some challenging climbs.
