FORMER TEACHER - Trade Visa, Residency, and Health Insurance

I wish I could give you more specific details about this process but I don't have them. I was exempt from this process. I'm just going to give you an overview of the process so that you can ask more specific questions.

To work in Slovakia you must have:

  • A trade visa
  • Slovakian national health insurance
  • Two bank accounts - one personal, one business
  • A residency card
The trade council office in Nitra has recently experienced incredible backlogs due to mass hiring at the Jaguar factory. Hopefully that is no longer a problem when you arrive. Regardless, the various government offices that handle these documents are not very efficient so you'll likely spend more than one morning waiting for one or the other.

Other notes:

  • Your contract will state that the fees for this whole process range from 100 - 500 euros. If you are not an EU citizen, this will go to 500 euros. Plan for that as you budget.
  • When you fly into the EU Schengen Area you will have 90-days to get everything sorted. If you do not obtain your residency card within 90 days, you will need to leave. This happened to an Australian teacher while I was working for the school.
  • If you are an EU citizen your expenses should be less but the same steps are required.
  • Pay close attention to the 500 euro cost if you are coming in for less than a full year. If you stay for the full 10-month contract then it costs you 50 euro a month to work legally. However, if you are filling in for only four months, now your monthly budget takes a 125-euro hit.

Comments

  1. Everyone is required to bring a criminal background check document when they come to work in Slovakia. As an American, I brought a federal document (FBI) and a state document (Virginia). Be aware that when you give these to Peter you won't get them back. It's always a good idea in the TEFL world to bring back-up copies. If you need to switch jobs it will save you the hassle of sending for new background checks.

FORMER TEACHER - How Can I Help You?

Hello, My name is Jim. I was a teacher at the Kramar school from February - May 2019. During my time in Zlate Moravce I documented many things that I believe will help future teachers. I started this blog so that I can share this information. This blog is completely independent of the Kramar school. The information here was accurate when I was in Zlate Moravce. Some of the details may have changed but this information should still help you ask the right questions. If you are heading to  Jazykova Skola Kramar or another school in  Zlate Moravce, please feel free to contact me - especially if the school has told you not to contact me. My direct email is jleonard518@gmail.com. We can also arrange a WhatsApp call. Good Luck, Jim https://www.facebook.com/jskramar/

FORMER TEACHER - Leaving Early in June

For the past two years Peter has offered to have the native speakers leave before the end of June. The school is open until the last Thursday in June. This year the last day of school is Thursday, June 27th. Peter may want you to stay through the end of June next year. In 2019 he asked all three native speakers if they would like to skip the last two weeks. There's nothing wrong with departing early but you need to be aware of the possibility so that you can plan. Consider this when making your flight arrangements for the end of June.  Remember than if you leave early and opt to travel you will only be paid a half month's salary for June.  https://www.facebook.com/jskramar/
